I use research based principles to select the most beneficial elements to include in your design to meet your specific needs.
For example, there is a mindfulness exercise that may help reduce anxiety called The 54321 Grounding technique. This exercise asks you to use your five senses to reconnect your mind and body to the present. Therefore, when designing a garden to help reduce symptoms of anxiety, I will include elements that appeal to your five senses. For example, I will select plants that have visual interest or attract butterflies and birds. There should be soothing sounds from surrounding wildlife, a fountain or windchime. Herbs such as rosemary, society garlic and peppermint are reliable sources of aromas and taste. Finally, the soft fluffy leaves of lambs ear or the smooth velvet of succulents provide enriching tactile sensations.
Swings are recognized as a great addition to the outdoor space. Children and adults benefit from this movement and there are a variety of swings on the market to meet individual needs. A pergola with heavy duty hooks allows you to have a variety of swings at one time or change out different kinds of swings as needed, depending on space availability. Our family loves the hammock swing for its gentle compression.
The condition of the soil is the most important thing a designer must know in order to make appropriate plant selections.
When I look at a potential plot for a garden I need to know:
Is there a boggy wet spot?
Is the soil compacted and in need of soil conditioners?
Does the soil need compost?
What is the pH of the soil?
After that, we have to discuss:
Do you want plants that will grow in the bog or do you want amendments that will help improve drainage?
Are you planning to water a dry bed regularly or should I choose plants that are drought tolerant?
All of these conversations are necessary for the design process and are based on the condition of the soil.
